High Desert Athletic Club
High Desert Athletic Club is a collection of competitive Olympic weightlifters
and coaches in northern New Mexico. HDAC athletes compete in USA Weightlifting sanctioned
events at every level from local to international. Currently there
are HDAC gyms in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos.
Two lifts are performed in an Olympic weightlifting competition: (1)
the snatch and (2) the clean & jerk. Each lifter has three attempts
at each lift. Placings are determined by the total of the largest
snatch and the largest clean & jerk for each athlete. As in sports
like wrestling and boxing, weightlifting has weight classes so that smaller
athletes are not at a disadvantage. There are currently 8 weight classes
for men (56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg, 105+ kg) and
7 weight classes for women (48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 75+
kg). Additionally, there are junior (under 21 years old) and masters
(over 35 years old) divisions.
HDAC is a non-profit organization. If you would like to make a tax deductible
donation to support weightlifting, feel free to contact us. Donations are
used for such things as equipment and travel expenses for meets.
